Can Things Get Better? Part I.

Our world always seems to be on the brink of one form of trouble or another. Yet, often surprisingly so, we seem to recover only to face a new challenge. Could it be that this apparent dance macabre arises from our global failure to re-envision the world as a spiritual manifestation? Can our predicament be due to our Western-scientific-based belief that the world and all its phenomena, including life and mind, fundamentally emerge out of matter? Could it be that with a different worldview things might get better? In this short essay, I will examine this belief and indicate what we might expect if we were to accept the counter-idea that matter, mind, and life all arose from a far more complex entity called spirit or consciousness.
In brief, something called consciousness provides the fundamental ground of being out of which all physical and mental phenomena emerge. Although many spiritually-inclined people may take this view, it doesn’t seem to fit with common beliefs coming from scientific reasoning. But what about most of the world’s non-science-based beliefs (if even anything like a world belief system can be imagined)? Do you the reader actually believe that mind or consciousness came first? Or perhaps better put, could such a view have any scientific, spiritual, or even logical foundation? And even if it did, would this change your view or your way of life (or the world’s)?

Discovering some science about this would absolutely change everything. Science is one thing people can't get away from. When the power of science showed that the earth revolved around the sun, our whole perception changed. This changed our understanding of everything. The idea of change frightens people because they want to be right and certain, and when new things come in it can be scary. However I think our understanding of this would make the world reborn again,

You make a good point, MoneyBanks. Understanding has been expanding since the beginning of recorded history. So if expanded understanding is continuous, aren't we continuously being reborn again?

I think issue with the world is that while things like technology grow, human beings as a whole, don't. There always seem to be certain exceptional individuals in each generation, but they generally seem to be overshadowed and often overpowered. Perhaps this is why history continually repeats itself. "Our predicament" could well be related to the general belief that "the world and all its phenomena... emerge out of matter" because it lends to an external, material belief. It satisfies the physical senses. It is through that which is tangible that most people interpret and create their realities. Of course, we know the physical or external is just a small part of all we are individually and collectively.

To me, consciousness is eternal. I think you can have consciousness without mind, but not mind without consciousness. Look at a single celled microbe. It has consciousness but no mind. I know many believe that only we humans are the only conscious creatures on Earth. I believe all life bears consciousness. So, to me, consciousness not only came first, but, as you mentioned, is where everything emerges... including mind.

I'm one of those whom believes that science and spirituality will, if not already, walk hand in hand. Metaphysics is simply science not yet discovered. It is our very nature to be inquisitive and want to learn about our true origins and God. I've often wondered what it would take to create a worldwide epiphany where we humans as whole finally "wake up" in our internal and spiritual evolution. I think that the work of all of those that seek knowledge including the wonderful scientists and even the philosophers and visionaries of the world will continue to evolve human knowledge and wisdom.

I know from my own experience what a profound affect exploring and learning about the deeper science and wisdom can have on a person. Even at 42 years old, I grow and evolve everyday. Ultimately I hold out hope that one day(probably long after we're gone) this knowledge can take root in our world society and bring human kind in to a new enlightened state where the basic evils like war, greed, hatred, and even lust become obsolete.

Mind and consciousness had to come first. Hawking addresses behind the big bang...it's obvious that creation is preceeded by mind, empowered by consciousness.

Yes Fred, ABSOLUTE CONSCIOUSNESS is missing everywhere (in school, in neuroscience, in physics) we are stucked in our evolution because we do not acknowledge/realize Absolute Consciousness/GOD as THE ONLY SOURCE OF ALL THAT IS.

Here some thoughts based on the old scripts of the upanishads/the teaching of Maya (=illusionary world)

There is nothing out there!!
not a star, not a worm but only Absolute consciousness. Absolute Consciousness cannot become matter nor energy - the so called real world does not exist.
The so called real world, is a PROJECTION of the Absolute Consciousness..it is God disguising himself. A cosmic dream!

I am Absolute Consciousness and my personality, etc. and thoughts, ideas are projection of Absolute consciousness, if it "decides" to "send" them...ponder that! (smile)

I have a chance to be Absolute consciousness as the OBSERVER.

Hello sir, I am Balaji @ Wishvam from India.
I came to know you from the book The Yoga of Time Travel: How the Mind Can Defeat Time ... in which you have considered The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali... that i read from http://www.crystalinks.com/timetravel.html..

well i'm an engineering student doing B.Tech Information Technology. but i rather interested in digging some old resource such as surya siddhanta in which Indians have found pi long before pythogoras theorem and some more fascinating things.. and I believe there must be some hints left by them to be understand by us.. also i personally want you to read this post which i found interesting may be to you too.. http://theorypedia.com/Cyclic-Theory-Of-Time-In-Hinduism-t94cbf2b.html

I studied Theology to become a Pentecostal Minister. If you will please consider the following scriptures in JOHN 4:23 23 “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him”. Also JOHN 4:24 “God is a Spirit: and THEY THAT WORSHIP HIM must worship him in spirit and in truth” .
Worshipping God in Spirit is important because HIS SPIRIT IS SUCH A POWERFUL ENERGY! The Energy of God is extremely powerful, and that powerful Energy want to Possess you. I know the Church hate the word “possession” because we often think of Demon Possession, but that’s how they work. God’s Possession is important so that we do not become Demon Possessed. It is the Spiritual Energy of God that once combined with our Spiritual Energy to become ONE. When this practice happens a whole different World becomes known. This is all Physical, believe me you feel everything! What you feel is something that can’t be explained, but it the most wonderful experience of your life!
You state the following “In brief, something called consciousness provides the fundamental ground of being out of which all physical and mental phenomena emerge”. My experience with Spirits have been phenomenal! I’ve have had out-of-body experiences, seen and heard Spirits form the other side. I have visited other universes! I have been told the future in many cases, has witness Demons and Angels and many, many more unusual occurrences I could write a book. Many people would never believe my story!
I do believe there are different universes out there, and that there are a great number of parallel realities coexisting with us. I also believe there are far more Energies out there other than Godly or Demonic. In fact, I believe we coexist with many universes! Now I fully understand why the following scripture states in EXODUS 34:14 “For thou shalt worship NO OTHER GOD: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God” I believe our Parallel World has MANY GODS! Of course the Church would have a problem with my beliefs. That’s why I no longer preach. I’ve seen, felt and heard so much between these universes that I must continue my quest to understand what’s really out there.

After years of trying to understand how a year of my memory can be missing. Ive concluded that since i know where i was that year it must be a quantum effect that surrounds that year.

In a recent presentation I gave at an Astronomy club meeting on Quantum mechanics (disguised by the title “Planets in Motion”), I defined matter as energy in motion. Currently, we have no absolute description of what energy is because the method of measurement determines the properties observed — is it a wave or is it a particle? As Dr. Wolf explains, it is both and neither. There are no electrons and there are electrons.

The energy that matter is composed of only has “properties” when measured. Likewise, God, the Mind, Spirit, Soul, Life, all these characteristics take “shape" only when “measured" by Thought. Therein lies the Catch-22. You can’t define the truly undefinable by something that itself has not, as yet, been truly defined. Yet, by their effects we accept such things exist.

Hence, scientifically, we consider that certain “effects” that have undefined “causes" are yet to be defined by experiments that we have yet to discover the proper tools for. This does not in any way mean that the effects themselves do not exist in some form.

I guess that if you really want to know the answer to What Is God then do as Bhudda instructed and go within.

Where is “within?”
